June 18th saw two of the East Grinstead poets off to collect their certificates and welcome monetary awards, at a prize givin ceremony which took place at Eades House, Chichester.
Mary Hunt was awarded 3rd prize in the 'open' poetry competition with a very witty discourse on the humble British (?) Tea Bag. The title Thè Internationale - mark the accented è - was a stroke of genius.
2nd prize in the 'open' was won by Tom Riley, with a joyful revue of life after the age of seventy, the title: Beyond The Climacteric.
1st prize in the 'open' went to a poet colleague of Tom's, Beryl Fleming, of the Eastbourne based Downland poets, for a romantic and wistful remembrance of a much-loved but lately neglected old wicker chair; the poem was presented in free verse form.
The worthy winner of the 'Remembrance' themed poetry section presented the scene a few moments before impact in the events of September 11th at 'Ground Zero', and the reflective thoughts of a victim. Another free verse winner, with a chilling line, 'bagels and peanut jelly sandwiches' casually underlining the terrorists' racial aim.
